Le Challenge - order

When I read the Le Challenge theme for March which is ORDER I knew it means color order for me. I tend to sort things by colors and put them in "right" order.

I started making those felted balls some time ago. I decided to put them on very simple necklace but it seems I made the balls way to big. Oh well, I can eventually try to make something different out of them. We'll see.

At least they are in nice color order so I'm linking up with Le Challenge.

Back in February I made this turquoise necklace for my friend I just forgot to share. I like this one better so maybe making it longer is the way to go.

Q1 - Pantone quilt challenge

The wait is over and here is my Pantone quilt challenge project - minis category. It is also part of my Q1 FAL list which you can check here.

It all started with few strips. I seen a bag with flap made out by meshwork technique. I just couldn't resist and I had to try it out. I love tumbling blocks for some reason.

My trial looked good so I had to figure out what to do with it next. How about a bigger tumbling block?!

So I made a cardboard template and stitched the cube together using EPP technique. The top part is much thicker than the sides but it adds texture and a bit of 3D effect.

At first I wanted to do sashiko tumbling block background but once I pulled the white dots out I quickly changed my mind. It adds even more interest at least for my eyes :-)

So I turned the whole thing into mini for my sewing corner as I just want to keep looking at that thing. The size is based on my board which is already there. Those two stripes on the binding are pieced in different direction on purpose. Little details are what I like.

I didn't want the quilting to be visible on front. There are straight lines within the white dots and you can see it better on back side. The fabric I used for back is print. When I talk with my friends about the things I like they told me couple of time "it's Vasarely". I couldn't even remember the name at first but I looked that up and yes you should really check his work out! So the undertone of my piece is Vasarely :-)
It measures 14x16".

Pantone fever

I'm sure you all already heard about Pantone Quilt Challenge. As the link up opens this Friday I try to finish my projects.

That's right. I might have two. I showed you little woven something. That piece of meshwork is part of EPP cube. I love tumbling blocks so this one is mini to become. 

For a few days I thought that's all I do but my original idea kept bothering me. So I worked on it a bit to see if it's going somewhere or not. I showed it to few friends and they told me to finish that thing.

I just need to add the Pantone color. No, this is not the final layout. This is just a teasing post :-)

Tutorial - Leather scraps zipper pulls

I originally written this tutorial for Leanne @ Sew Can She and now it's time to bring it back up. It was a great experience for me to try it out and Leanne's encouragement brought up my desire to put together some more tuts. I hope to share some soon.

What will you need to create leather zipper pulls?

Leather scraps, pliers with piecing and riveting tools, various key rings, rivets, scissors. Optional: pinking shears, rotary cutter, eyelets.

There are different types of zippers with various zipper pulls. Based on the zipper pull choose the right key ring that will fit properly. If needed use two key rings. Use small one as reduction for the larger one.

Measure the inner part of your key ring. In the example above it is 1.1cm. Multiple by 4 as you'll fold the edges of the leather towards centre. Please use this as example. It depends on the leather you are using. With softer leather I ended up using smaller key ring. The best way to determine the size is to try to fold the leather up and put the key ring on.

Once you have the key ring on fold the edges of the leather in to the middle. Put some kind of clip to hold the edges if desired. Punch the holes through all layers.

Do not worry if you don't manage to make holes in all the layers. Unfold and cut/clear the holes out with scissors.

Create a tassel by cutting straight lines toward the centre. Use pinking shears for fancy edges. Fold up again and line up those holes. Attach the rivet.

I use my pliers to attach the rivet. 

There are many possibilities. Create circles, hexagons and other shapes based on the style of your pouch. Here are just a few examples to get your creativity flow. You can also use eyelets if you don't have any rivets on hand.

If you don't feel like using hardware simply cut out strip of leather and attach to zipper pull. The knot is called Lark's head (cow hitch) and it is the simplest zipper pull I have to share.

March goal

Here we go again. Should I put up another goal or not? I have number of things in progress. Mostly "let's start something new" stage and I don't see a light at the end of the tunnel. I'm a bit restless not young any more though.

Last night I cut into this fabric to create some kaleidoscope wall hanging. So let's make it my goal - the top to be precise. This is not the layout and also the size is much smaller than what is needed. Lots more to be added and decided on. Wish me luck :-)

I was feeling up to some FMQ practice but I ended up with straight line quilting and a touch of hand stitching. I find the hand stitching much more relaxing than FMQ. That's my block from last year's Skill Builder BoM. Cushion cover to become.

I plan to use these fabrics for The Triangle Quilt Along (button on the side bar) and that's why I quilted triangle grid. Easy and doable that is what I was up to.
