OMG - 02

It took me a while to figure out what my goal for this month will be. But I got it!

I'm going to use these fancy zippers. I bought them few years back. I checked IG for ideas and found one page that has 2 tutorials suitable. One is called Boxy Lace Zipper Pouch and the other Pretty Lace Zip Pencil Pouch. I tried neither one so that's my OMG goal for this month. Yay! Excited :)

Yeah, first step is matching zippers with fabrics. As per usual :)

Tutorial: paper tin cover

For making paper tin cover you will obviously need some paper tins. My tins come mostly from alternative coffee products, granulated tea for kids or müsli.

For creating post stamp blocks I have used this tutorial. It's easy technique which I previously used on few projects.

To determine the size of your block measure your tin and add a little bit to each side. I mostly add approximately 0.5" but in this case it depends on the size of your squares used to make the block.

Since there is already interfacing in these blocks I do not add any batting. If you will use batting make it the size of your tin without the folding addition.

Here you can see the top with exceeded fabric folded over and top stitched. The bottom looks the same. Once you have your block top stitched at the top and bottom you wrap it around your tin and pin to determine where to sew together.

And that's it. Turn it around and slide on your tin.

It's fairly easy. I did not use exact measurements in this tutorial since all tins are different. I hope you find it useful and try it yourself.

If you would like to hang your tin on rod just like I do add piece of ribbon and button for that purpose. The ribbon is added prior sewing the whole piece together.

You can also use any other type of block or just plain fabric. Just add piece of batting or make it as QAYG. Dress it up to suit your needs. Here are some examples.

I do get asked what do I put inside. Well here is peak. Not all my tins are fully loaded since I finished them just yesterday :)

Pouches

Sometimes when I see tutorial I have to try it right away. That is what happend with those two pouches. You can find it here. It is called single scoop zipper bag.

This one was a trial. I simple quilted few lines. Matching thread so look at the brown ones :)

I used some leather scraps as embelishment for the second one.

Plus these little flowers I made while ago. They suppose to be poppy seeds.

I have also finish the pouch with green accent. This is probably my fav type.

Made out of one piece which creates no seam at the bottom.

Zipper installed as open wide. Find the tut here. Some dots always sneak in.

This time I just tucked the end of zipper to the side to create small loop. It might not be visible but I quilted the green part with green thread. Great project for little scraps. I want to do some more color options as I have plenty of scraps.

MM - pouches

Last Monday I said I would like to make tutorial for all those one exterior piece pouches I recently made. I published it yesterday and you can find it here.

I was wondering if I can make one of those with vinyl. So I tried it right away. Please meet the almost invisible pouch :)

I heard some people sort Lego by color. We don't really sort. We have everything in huge Ikea box which fits underneath the couch but those would look cool. Anyway this is gift and we are not keeping it.

Not bad for a trial.

Last night I made some progress with leather embellishment. The inspiration comes from this pouch. I previously made it in grey and you can spot those in my blog header.

You only need to make sure you fold all those circles the same way. Otherwise it doesn't look good.

On Friday I forgot to link up with Paper Piecing Party. Here is my one and only flake (No.2). It'll become cushion. I'm just trying to decide if I want to keep the hexagon shape or make it square. You can find new pattern - flake No.5 here. All of them are really pretty and I can see different sizes of those placed randomly on quilt top but paper piecing is just not my thing. I really like the blue background others are using even though blue is not my color and you hardly find any in my stash. Are you doing the Snowalong?

Tutorial: One exterior piece pouch

There are many tutorials how to make zippered pouch. Here is the Negligent style :)

You'll need one exterior piece either quilted or with regular iron on interfacing, one zipper and two lining pieces.

Measurements: A = 42cm, B = width of your zipper, mine was 22cm, C = A divided by 2 + seam allowance, 21+1= 22cm

Place your zipper teeth facing right side of your exterior piece and add lining wrong side facing up. Not pictured but right side of exterior and lining are facing each other.

Tip: If you are beginner in pouch making I'll recommend you use solid where there is no need to figure out wrong or right side.

Use your zipper foot to attach the zipper. I sew the zipper open. Once I get closer to the zipper pull, I'll lift the foot, slide the zipper pull out of the way and finish the last bit of zipper.

Place your second lining piece right side facing up, zipper teeth should face up as well and exterior piece is right sides together which means the wrong side is facing up. See the picture above.

I sew this side of zipper the same way. Sew it open, slide the zipper pull out of the way and finish.

This is optional step and I only do it if I will not topstitch the whole pouch once finished. I either topstitch or zigzag lining piece. Make sure you only sew on lining and zipper edge. This should be only visible inside the pouch.

I do that on both sides. Once again, make sure you do not sew over exterior piece!

This is what your piece should look like. Exterior piece if forming a loop and lining pieces are over lapping.

Important: Open up zipper before begging the pouch assembly! 

I prefer to make turning gap on the side. If you prefer to have it on bottom, make it on the bottom. Otherwise follow the red lines and sew the pieces together.

Box the corner on exterior piece. Make sure you have the seam in the middle. Mine was 8cm that means 4cm on the left side, 4cm on the right side. Also make sure that you make both corners the same size. Trim.

Box the corners on lining as well. Put a pin through the seams to make them face each other.

Use your ruler and mark the line. See 4cm to each side.

Once you finish, it should look like in picture above. Turn inside out through opening gap.

Close opening gap by machine or hand. Up to you.

Iron well and you are done!

There are many options for exterior piece. Make it out of selvedges, use FMQ piece or use other technique. The advantage of using one exterior piece is that you end up with no seam at the bottom.

You can also make the open wide zippered pouch with one exterior piece. Just use longer zipper and check out the different way of attaching zipper.
