Tutorial: Woven fabric hearts

Woven fabric hearts are basically raw edge appliqué. You will need some lightweight fusible web, few fabric scraps, rotary cutter, ruler and mat. 

For this tutorial I'm using two charm squares (12,5x12,5cm). If you only want to create one heart prepare two rectangles each measuring 6x12cm and attached the fusible web according to manufactures instructions.

My version of fusible web doesn't have a paper on one side so I need to use some baking paper to attach it to the fabric.

You might want to create paper template and try out the shape. It is optional. You can always adjust the size by trimming the shape of the heart once is finished.

If you are using charm square cut of the edges to create two rectangles 6x12cm. If your fusible web has a paper on now it is the time to take it off.

Draw a curve on top of your rectangles or use the paper template if you created one. Cut 6 strips starting at the bottom. Each strip measures 7x1cm.

If you did not take the paper off on your fusible web now you really should as we are going to woven the strips.

Go one row after another one. It is pretty simple. Check out the pics.

We need to tight up those hearts a bit. I use pair of scissors. I gently pull each strip alternating the sides. Do not worry about exceeding ends.

Place your hearts on non sticky surface such as baking or freezer paper. Gently iron making sure your heart is nice and tight.

Cut off exceeding ends. If you not happy with the shape of your heart you can adjust it as well.

And you are all done. Use as any other appliqué for table runner or mug rug or anything else.

Q1 - Log cabin SAL finished

I have a second finish for the FAL Q1. It is #2 on my list which you can find HERE. I started with B&W log cabins and turned those into little zipper pouch. The back side is also B&W. The shape of this pouch is basically the shape of Perfect zip bag by Elizabeth Hartmann. I have only assembled the zipper differently.

As I was working on my Color wheel quilt while making those B&W logs I had the colorful scraps on my table and it inspired me to play with the primary colors. I put the complementary color in the middle of the scrappy bright cabins.

As I liked the yellow/red combination the most I decided I'll make lining piece out of. The basket is well known pattern by Noodlehead called Divided Basket.

The sew along was really fun. You can find the winners over @ Sew Can She. The FB group was really interactive and supportive. I really enjoyed having almost instant feedback. I guess that is what drives people to Instagram.

It was the first time I was making log cabins. I used 1/4 inch presser foot with guide. I use it for all patchwork projects. That is my accuracy "secret" tool. I love that thing. I ironed every single log during my first B&W try but I wanted to see if it makes any difference if I don't. So I did not use the iron on those colorful ones and I don't see any difference. I'm not telling you not to use iron I just wanted to share my experience.

You might have noticed I used some leather for the handles. I wish I put them further apart as they slightly deforming the shape of the basket. It used to be a belt nobody was wearing. Unfortunately not long enough to use on tote but just fine for these handles.

February goal

I don't think I need to set another goal for myself but I'm doing it anyway. I have quite a few projects in progress but as I finished one today I'm feeling I might start something new, lol.

I took this picture back in September when I received all the fabrics to make a quilt for a friend of mine. Well these did not make it into the color scheme I went with.

My goal for February is to turn these strips into Scappy Lone Star. You might remember I already made one out of Cherry Christmas jelly roll. It is more a wish than a goal. Just to put it together, the one giant block. That's it.

Colors

That is certainly a yellow overload. I don't work with yellow too often. I'm trying to find some shades that wouldn't hurt my eyes, lol. Where is my dislike of yellow coming from? I remember one jumper which was really pretty it was brown at the bottom and it got yellow at the top and hood. I looked so bad in it. It made my skin look even paler than usual and that's probably where it all started. Don't take me too serious but yes I'm having hard time to find my way toward yellow.

This project has something to do with my bright log cabins. I quilted it in anyhow style. I really like QAYG projects but making straight lines can be a bit boring. Orange on the other side is one of my fav colors.

This has iron on interfacing so no need for heavy quilting. Few straight lines will do the job and we are moving on to red.

I'm fine with red. I just don't use it that often as many fabrics just leak the color. This is not FMQ that is a stitch on my machine which I really like. I would like to quilt entire quilt with it one day.

And what is it that I'm making? Divided basket by Noodlehead. My lining with be all happy and bright.

I used some leftovers from my color wheel quilt. There is slight progress on it. I marked some lines to determine each color segment. I just need to baste it and get in the mood for some FMQ adrenalin.

Plus I have the binding ready for Summertime sadness quilt. It'll be grey.

I almost fully recovered from winter cold and I'm all over the place, lol.

Valentine's mat

On Saturday I read about Valentine Table Runner theme for Across the Pond Sew Along. Check out all the ideas Amanda is sharing on her blog The Patchsmith.

On the same day Sew Mama Sew blog published Little Gifts of Love Challenge. You know how I love challenges so why not combine those two. I knew I have to do something right away otherwise I just miss the deadline. I got inspired by my girl. She seems to have that crafting bug as well as she is making something all the time. Her woven paper hearts just seemed to fit the bill. I made quick draft to determine how many fabrics I will need. I made it in the evening so no pic from the process making but it is really sew easy. Anyway if you feel like you would like a tut for these hearts let me know.

It is basically raw edge appliqué.  

The size of the grid is based on the size of my masking tape. 

My #1 tool when it comes to straight line quilting.

For the back side I picked some strawberries. 

I wanted round mat to fit on our stool which is used as table for some tea time play.

See what I mean :-)

I tried to get away with leftover binding but it didn't work. 

You should really use a bias if you fancy round mat. Just saying. 

Tea anyone? I hear you. Tea bags are on my to do list for ages. 

So I should rather pretend we play coffee.
